Soil Layer Descriptions

Humus (Layer O)

The organic layer at the very top, made of decomposed leaves and organic material. It's rich in nutrients and holds moisture like a sponge.

Topsoil (Layer A)

The "Zone of Life." This dark, rich layer is where most roots grow and where billions of organisms like earthworms and fungi live.

Subsoil (Layer B)

A lighter-colored layer rich in minerals that have washed down from above. It's tougher and contains less organic matter than topsoil.

Parent Material (Layer C)

Large rocks and weathered material. There is very little organic life here, as it's the foundation upon which soil forms.

Bedrock (Layer R)

The solid rock foundation that lies beneath everything. It is the unweathered rock that serves as the base of the soil profile.
